In this workshop, we will steam distill local in-season plants grown on the High Desert Observatory property to create hydrosol. Hydrosols, also known as "flower waters," are produced by distilling fresh leaves, fruits, flowers, and other plant materials. These aromatic waters are created during the essential oil making process and contain similar properties to essential oils, however they are less concentrated and have soft subtle aromas, and contain the water soluble elements of plants. Hydrosols offer skin care benefits and make wonderful single ingredient perfumes, deodorants, facial toners, air fresheners, and aromatherapy sprays.

Over the course of three hours the class will process and steam distill plants as well as explore the distilled plants’ properties through making additional natural skincare items and teas. Plants in focus will depend on what is in season and what can be sustainably harvested on the High Desert Observatory property. Possible plants include - sage, desert lavender, and or juniper. Each participant will leave with a bottle of hydrosol and additional skincare items made in class.
